Geoffrey
S. Jade Barrett, '78, a lifelong bridge player, lives
in Vancouver, Washington with his wife Karen, three dogs
and a plethora of antique whist and bridge paraphernalia.
A Diamond Life Master in both the American Contract Bridge
League and the American Bridge Association, Jade celebrated
his 10,000th masterpoint while competing in the Portland
OR Regional in 2002. With more than 185 Blue Ribbon Qualifications
(first and second places in major events) including tournament
wins in Mexico, Bermuda, Canada, The Netherlands, Ireland,
Scotland and France, he was the winner of the Orbis Bermuda
2000 Transnational Mixed Teams at the Bermuda Bowl, one
of the four quadrennial world championships.
Club owner, director, author, lecturer, vuegraph commentator,
trainer, coach and full time professional are all roles
that Jade has filled as a member of the bridge community.
Co-Chairman of the Reno 2004 NABC, First Alternate for
the national Board of Directors from ACBL District 20
(Pacific Northwest), a member of the National Goodwill
Committee, United States Bridge Federation committee member
(the USOC coordinating organization) and an elector of
the Hall of Fame, he is exceptionally active in the workings
of the ACBL, but it is his support of Junior Bridge that
he is best known for. Chairman of the North American Youth
Bridge Foundation, he has been a Captain, player and Coach
for eleven different USA and North American Junior Teams,
including the winners of the Irish and Scottish Invitational
youth teams in 2000 and 2001 and one of the gold medal
winning juniors at the Olympics in Salt Lake. As a Director
at the ACBL junior camps, online gatherings and the training
programs that the NAYBF operates, Jade has provided the
finer points of bridge to over five hundred junior players
worldwide.
Jade is at home as a frequent competitor at the Vancouver
Bridge Club, willing to fill in when and where needed
and enjoys directing from time to time. As a member of
the International Bridge Press Association, he writes
the popular Bridge Stewardship for the Western Conference
Forum and two other well known series: It's All In Your
Head and Learning Curve which are published in Our Bridge
To You and elsewhere; through these features Jade continues
to contribute daily to the game he loves. |
